Hey everybody, with Guilty on its way, it’s time to start taking a few looks at the game and the locations and people you’re set to encounter. This week, we’ll be taking a look at Akatsuki City, where the game is set.As described in the catalogue entry, Akatsuki City falls under the VN trope of “rebuilt city after a disaster”, similar to the location in ef. However, ef’s rebuilding seems to be for the better. Akatsuki City’s offers a few more dark surprises along the way.
At the beginning, you spend a lot of time in three places. First is Ohguri Academy, a middle of the road school without much to set it apart from anywhere else (does this sound familiar?).
Once you leave the Academy, things begin to take twists and turns. As a disgruntled young man, you spend a lot of your time on the streets and in the park, beating up all sorts of random thugs and learning how to be a better fighter. This derelict area provides the background for some of the game’s key scenes.
More comfortingly, you also spend a lot of time at work, in this case at your uncle’s Italian restaurant, Da Noi, where you work with some of the girls and have quality family time in addition to your home.
As the game progresses, you begin to see other parts of Akatsuki City, such as a luxury hotel, a massive department store, and the redevelopment project’s pinnacle, the new City Hall. While the City Hall is tall enough to be seen everywhere in the city, there’s something disturbing and mysterious about it, not least of which because of the large sums of money donated towards its construction by the Emess organisation and the offices it’s keeping within…
