Funbag Fantasy is set in a very coherent world, with just the right amount of fantasy to push it beyond reality, but not make it convoluted. Occasionally, unless a game is intended to be set totally in real life, it’s hard to pin down just what kind of setting it has. There can be an expansive number of thematic elements, and sometimes things may seem to go back and forth in regard to how technologically advanced the civilizations are. Think, “we just stepped off an airship, but we have no communication equipment to check on our friends”. Seriously, what is up with game character never having cell phones despite their level of technology? There were no instances in FF where I had to stop and say “hold on a minute…”. The world imagery and storytelling was consistently clear enough to allow the dialogue to stand as the primary fuel for the story. Maybe the only part that was slightly unexpected was when they mentioned cannons for castle sieges. By that point in the game I was beginning to think only melee weapons existed. Continue reading

Sex and Hardship in Funbag Fantasy
Nothing “comes” easily… at least not in the figurative sense. Funbag Fantasy in my opinion did a really good job of making each sexual encounter have an element of challenge, or danger. Lute is a guy, like many guys in eroge, who finds himself in more-than-favorable situations with women; sometimes so over the top you have to take a moment to appreciate the ridiculousness. Demons in Funbag Fantasy
Funbag Fantasy has a very colorful world setting. Not extraordinarily complicated with magical airships and time travel, but more leaning on the “classical” side of the fantasy genre. If I had to liken it a console game world, I would say Dragon Quest, or maybe Suikoden. Anyway, a large part of the game’s story has to do with the relationship of humans and demons. Humans have imposed a continent-wide eradication order on the demons after a time of co-existing, but they are rumored to still live on the fringe. So already we can see at the most basic plot level that there is some “us vs them”, “good vs evil” elements at work. Maintaining the word “demon” throughout while glossing over some of the overlaps in Japanese was a bit difficult, but it illustrates the human tendency to classify different races of the occult as simply “demon”, or “evil”, which is certainly the tendency of the people in the game.
