St. Michael Girls’ School Column – The Day-to-Day of Yuri Vol. 6

Hello there.

This is Petals series producer Mi Kara Deta Saba again. I hope you’ll enjoy hearing about all the subtle differences between yuri games and male/female romance stories.

The English version of A Kiss For The Petals: Remembering How We Met is now available on MangaGamer.com and Steam!

Yuri Factions

“Yuri” is such a simple word, and yet it actually comes in a number of different varieties, almost like factions.  As a matter of fact, the Petals series is notably different from other works out there.

  • It’s strictly mushy.  There are no “bad ends” and as few depressing plot developments as possible.
  • It has sex scenes.  They’re packed in with plentiful frequency.
  • The couples are established relatively early in the story so that the primary focus is on their day-to-day interactions as lovers.

However, in the world of yuri fandom, there are also the following factions…

  • A faction that believes yuri should be unrequited.
  • A faction that believes sex scenes are unnecessary for yuri.
  • A faction that believes yuri relationships should be more than friends, but less than lovers.

Naturally, the Petals series seems to contradict all these points.  And make no mistake, the three factions above are by no means in the minority.

Quite the opposite.  When the Petals series first made the scene, the general feeling was that these kinds of works dominated the market.

Obviously some things are a matter of taste, and the point of this isn’t to say that something is right or wrong.

That said, whether it’s among the already-narrow categories of yuri, or something that had never been attempted until now, each has its particular fan base… And that’s the sort of thing that makes me find yuri so interesting.
