Long time no see! Tuna Salad here, editor for Hapymaher. Though it’s been a long (almost) two years, Hapymaher is finally done and only a few days away from release!
For those of you who recognize my name, thanks for sticking with MangaGamer all these years! Hapymaher marks the first time I get to write about a game I worked on in such an open format, and while I have been working with MangaGamer for a very long time now, I’ve mostly kept to the shadows.
But enough about me, let’s talk dreams!
Imagine being in control of your dreams–always in control of your dreams. From the moment you fall asleep, to when you wake up, you have full, unadulterated control over the limitless wonderland that is your imagination. An endless playground where you could be anyone you want, with anyone you want. A place where you could live a thousand lives in a thousand worlds, all in the span of one night.
Sounds pretty tempting, right?
Now imagine that comes with the risk of never waking up again. Certainly, there are worse ways to die, and this sounds downright pleasant compared to the alternatives. But what if that’s what you face every time you go to sleep? What if your chronic lucid dreaming keeps your mind from getting a good night’s rest, and leaves you tired and groggy all day, every day? Still sound like something you want?
Well, that’s the waking-hell poor Tohru Naito has to deal with in Hapymaher. Though he has most of his perpetual suffering under control, the reappearance of someone from his past makes him once again consider whether or not running away into a dream might be an option.
As ominous as the thought of never waking up can be, not everything about Hapymaher is doom and gloom. Sure temptation is rampant and death is but one momentary lapse of judgement away, but that doesn’t mean you can’t indulge in a little good, clean fun. The world of dreams is meant to be a happy place, a sanctuary for the mind after a weary day of classes and clingy little sisters.
Looking forward to a Christmas Eve night on the town? Got you covered. Wanna be the sole-surviving hero in your own zombie-apocalypse movie? That’s door number three. Thinking about having a little alone-time with that sexy sempai of yours who’s always teasing you left and right, and has tits like–Okay, I’ve said too much…
If all of this (and more) sounds like your cup of tea, then hop on down the rabbit hole to the MangaGamer store and take advantage of that pre-order sale while you still can! Purple Software wrote an amazing story of temptation and acceptance in Hapymaher, and to keep this wonderful story all to myself would be travesty. This two year journey has been like a crazy tea-party to me, so I hope all of you enjoy it as much as I enjoyed bringing it to you.
So…an eroge take on Inception (minus the heist stuff)?
On the surface it’s similar, but the temptation of the dream is actually just a defense mechanism for a far larger narrative.
It’s almost here! I’ve been waiting for this game for ages! Let’s all have sweet dreams.
